Our History

The name Stonebreaker comes from a historic stone-breaking machine imported from England, once used to crush rock for the construction of the iconic Swartberg Pass. This original machine, retired in 1962, still stands on our grounds — a proud reminder of the region’s rich engineering and travel heritage.

Nestled in the heart of the Klein Karoo, our lodge is more than a peaceful retreat. It's also a small step toward a greener future. We’re proud to host two of nature’s best carbon-friendly plants — the spekboom and the butter bush. These indigenous beauties thrive in our gardens and are among the most effective natural converters of CO₂ into precious oxygen.
